10 hacks for a painless move
Moving is a part of life, and it can be exciting or it can be complete torture. It all comes down to the way you prepare, so read our top suggestions for making your move easy.
10. Don't put off packing until the last minute
Starting early gives you the opportunity to pack efficiently, pace yourself, and avoid that panicked feeling that comes with having to rush to get all of your things out of your old place. You don't want to get caught throwing things away because you didn't have time to pack them, so make sure to get started even as early as a month in advance of your move.
9. Pack right.
Whether that's color coding your boxes, labeling, or organizing which room they're in, make sure that everything is done. That makes the mover's job easier, and it also makes your job easier when you have to unpack!
8. Get good boxes.
You can source boxes from people on Craigslist or other local groups, and you can even hit up your local liquor store or bookstore to see if you can take some boxes off their hands! You don't have to pay for a ton or anything at all, but you definitely want to make sure you're working with sturdy cardboard that won't fall apart mid-move.
7. Pack a moving kit.
If you're heading pretty far away or worried you won't have your most important items, put together a last-to-go kit with toiletries, snacks, important documents, and more. Keep it with you throughout the moving process so you never have to go without a toothbrush -- or worse.
6. Map out your floor plan.
Take the time to figure out where your furniture is going to go BEFORE your hired muscle gets it into the house. We suggest making paper cut-outs of the furniture and planning how the dimensions will work in your new space. This is an especially important step if you're downsizing.
5. Don't move what you won't use.
Moving is the best excuse possible to declutter your space. Hold a garage sale pre-packing process (see step #10!) and get rid of those goodwill items. As a bonus, you can always hire us to drop your stuff off at a donation center for you.
4. Hire movers.
This might sound like a shameless plug, but seriously, it's your best bet. Move-in time is greatly reduced when you've got all hands on deck. Avoid any injuries that come from lifting something too heavy and put your trust in the tried-and-true hands of reliable moving companies.
3. Consolidate cleaning supplies.
A lot of times, especially when moving out of an apartment or leased property, it's a good idea to do a last clean-through after your stuff is out. Keep your cleaning supplies in an easy-to-reach box
2. Strategize box use.
It's obvious that wardrobe boxes are for clothing. But also, small, sturdy boxes are ideal for books. Save space by wrapping your breakables in your extra clothing! No need to buy bubble wrap. Pack your glasses and stemware in clean socks. Pack your plates vertically so they're less likely to break.
